Lightweight, maneuverable and with lightning-in-a-bottle speed, today’s compound hunting bows come packed with fantastic features that will have your bowhunting patrons breaking down your front door! But while it’s uber important to have new makes and models to fit every wish or whim, it’s also important that you and your staff are well versed in providing the perfect fit for a wide range of customers with various hunting needs.
Remember, bow-buying customers have come to your retail outlet with a purpose, and often because they need help wading through all of the specifics of purchasing a new bow — one that’s a custom fit for their body, shooting style and hunting applications. There are several things to consider when purchasing a new bow — and you can be a big help here.
- Draw length and weight adjustment: These are critical for proper fit and feel, and all modern bows allow customization to match the archer’s body and strength. There’s no one-size-fits-all here.
- Axle-to-axle length: Short bows, many with sub 30-inch axle-to-axle length, are the perfect choice for hunting from tight places such as treestands and ground blinds — maneuverable, lightweight and fast as lightning. Longer models can offer smoother draw cycles and are often favored by hunters who hunt the wide open spaces of the West.
- Let-off percentage: Higher let-off means the archer holds less weight at full draw, which can be critical when waiting for a buck or bull to step into the shooting lane.
- Ready-to-hunt packages: Some bows come equipped with a sight, rest, quiver and stabilizer included. If not, this is the perfect opportunity to cross sell these important items. And be sure your staff is well trained in adding those ancillary items that complete the bow purchase and setup.
For those bowhunters who have been holding on to “Old Faithful” for decades, it’s up to you — their faithful archery retailer — to convince them it’s time for an upgrade, and to outfit them properly. Here are eight new-for-2026 compound bows that are sure to put them on the path to better shooting.
