A Dozen New Defensive Handguns

The self-defense market is strong and these guns are getting a lot of attention.

A Dozen New Defensive Handguns

According to the Pew Research Center, gun owners in the United States continue to cite protection far more than other factors, including hunting and sport shooting, as a major reason they own a gun. In fact, 72% of U.S. gun owners say protection is a major reason they own a gun.

That far surpasses the shares of gun owners who cite other reasons. And while a sizable majority of gun owners (71%) say they enjoy having a gun, an even larger share (81%) say they feel safer owning a gun.

That attitude is the reason demand for self-defense firearms remains high. And that corresponding demand is why so many gun companies introduce new self-defense and home-defense handguns year after year — both semi-auto pistols and revolvers. Let’s take a look at a dozen new models introduced just this year that your customers might like to add to their collection.

The Canik METE MC9 Prime represents the pinnacle of innovation and craftsmanship with the METE MC9 series of 9mm pistols. Designed to meet the demands of the modern shooter, this platform combines cutting-edge features with ergonomic enhancements, setting a new benchmark for micro compact handguns. At its core, the METE MC9 PRIME boasts a new enhanced compensated barrel and slide with an integrated expansion chamber, delivering superior accuracy and reduced muzzle rise.

New features for the PRIME model include full grip surface stippling with increased texture on both front and rear, vertical serration magazine release, flat-face trigger with 90-degree break, enlarged trigger guard, forward trigger guard texture, enhanced slide stop lever and slide serrations. All of those features are included in a package that is only 6.73 inches long and weighs 23.4 ounces empty. Capacity is 17+1, and the gun comes with two mags.

The Citadel Cerakote 1911 Baby .380 is exactly what it sounds like  — the spittin’ image of a 1911 but downsized and chambered in .380 ACP. It is designed to fit perfectly in the shooter’s hand and holster, while offering top quality at a very good price. Touted by the maker as being perfect for “personal protection, recreational shooting or concealed carry needs,” this little pistol features a 3.75-inch steel barrel, an overall length of 6.375 inches and a magazine capacity of seven rounds.

Features include an aluminum frame, beveled magazine well, ambidextrous thumb safety, and a crisp trigger pull. It also features a skeletonized hammer, dovetailed front and rear sights, and mild recoil thanks to the .380 chambering. Grooves on the slide’s front and rear assist in racking. The pistol comes with two magazines and is available in various Cerakote colors.

CZ-USA’s new P-09 C Nocturne is a compact SA/DA pistol that not only retains all key features of the previous CZ P-07/09 generation, but in some ways takes them even further. It comes with improved ergonomics, the ability to mount a red-dot sight without a plate and controls that further expand the features found in the CZ P-09 family.

New and improved features include a new texture pattern for improved traction, additional textured areas on the grip for an even more secure hold in the hand, the new optics-ready interface compatible with Shield RMS and Holosun K footprints, and a luminescent three-dot sight picture. Other upgrades are enhanced cocking serrations, a new slide stop design for easier control and improved ergonomics of the ambidextrous decocker and manual safety. Capacity is 10+1 of 9mm goodness.

European American Armory’s new Girsan Witness2311 Brat is an officer-sized double-stack 1911 available in either 9mm or .45 ACP. This highly anticipated evolution of the BRAT series features an optics-ready slide compatible with RMSc footprint optics, delivering on customer feedback and meeting the growing demand within the concealed carry community for optics- ready solutions.

“We were asked consistently to produce this model,” said Chase Duffey, EAA director of sales. “From past shows and direct conversations with consumers and dealers, the message was clear.” Featuring a 3.5-inch bull barrel, the new Brat has an ambidextrous thumb safety, grip safety and three-dot low-profile sights with a removable rear sight cap for attaching a red-dot. Other features include an accessory rail, an extended beavertail and a flared magazine well. The 9mm version has a capacity of 17+1, while the .45 holds 11+1 rounds.

The FN Reflex XL MRD is an internal hammer-fired single-action-only pistol that has no trouble living up to its FN heritage. A micro-compact pistol chambered in 9mm, it features a 3.8-inch, cold hammer-forged, stainless steel barrel with recessed target crown for maximum accuracy. The internal hammer operates with an SAO trigger pull of less than 5 pounds, and the gun is optics ready, compatible with the most popular red-dot sights.

For its sighting system, the Reflex XL MRD boasts a high-visibility tritium front night sight with orange-painted ring paired with an all-black, squared U-notch rear sight. The slide features easy grip cuts at front and rear and can be racked with very little effort, making it ideal for shooters with weaker hands. Small enough to easily conceal, this gun will also do the job as a nightstand gun or truck gun. Magazine capacity is 10, 15 or 18 rounds.

Heckler & Koch says its brand-new H&K CC9 handles like a full-size pistol while still delivering exceptional accuracy and control. Engineered with H&K’s signature precision and rigorous testing, the CC9 is held to the same standards as full-size duty pistols and tested to the NATO Army Armaments Group AC/225 standards.

The CC9 adapts to the user’s needs by way of a modular grip system with interchangeable backstraps that allows for personalized customization. With a full grip and the same length of pull as the full-sized VP9, the CC9 stays on target when it matters most. Its advanced trigger system ensures smooth, consistent pulls, while the enhanced recoil management allows for rapid, accurate follow-up shots. An optics-ready pistol, it comes with a high-vis, tritium front sight and a blacked out, serrated rear sight for quick target acquisition.

The all-new double-stack Kahr X9 pistol continues Kahr’s tradition of quality, precision, accuracy, reliability and safety. The Kahr X9 includes a precision 3.54-inch barrel for accuracy, a black polymer frame for comfortable handling and a blackened stainless steel slide with front serrations for improved grip. The deep inset backstrap facilitates draw from an appendix carry position, and protrusions are minimized for comfort during concealed carry. The trigger is the safe cam, double-action-only style that Kahr fans love.

Every X9 pistol is optics-ready, with the popular Holosun K footprint allowing the shooter to customize the gun to suit their needs. Each pistol comes with one 10-round stainless magazine (KX910), one finger rest grip extension for the KX910, two sleeves, base locks and base lock plates for Kahr X9 15-round and Sig 17-round X-Macro 9mm magazines.

The Nighthawk Double Agent is the company’s most concealed carry-friendly double-stack 1911 yet, offering outstanding performance in a sleek, compact and modern package. The commander-sized Double Agent features a newly designed, shorter, thinner, aluminum grip that minimizes printing, making it more discreet than other double-stack 1911s in the Nighthawk lineup. Its slide is carefully knurled and precisely deburred to provide optimal traction during slide manipulations without being abrasive enough to damage holsters.

Chambered in 9mm, the pistol features a custom trigger with a pull of 3.5 to 5 pounds, hand-polished ignition components, a Straight Eight Heinie Ledge rear sight, a Tritium front sight and an Ultra Hi-Cut front strap. Barrel length is 4.25 inches, and overall length is 7.85 inches. This piece of art weighs in at only 33.3 ounces unloaded. Capacity is a whopping 16+1.

The full-size S&W M&P9 M2.0 Metal would make a welcome addition to any nightstand or other place home-defense pistols are kept. The lightweight, rigid metal frame provides an extraordinary foundation for higher performance. Yet since the pistol is built on the M&P platform, it is compatible with all M2.0 magazines, slides, holsters and palm swells.

Features include an optimal 18-degree grip angle for natural point of aim, four interchangeable palm swell grip inserts for optimal hand fit and trigger reach, a textured polymer front strap, wide slide stop and reversible magazine release. It also boasts a reversible magazine release, an M2.0 flat-face trigger for consistent finger placement, an enhanced sear for lighter, crisper trigger let-off and a Picatinny-style rail for accessories. The slide is cut for an optic, and the pistol has a capacity of 15+1.

Walther has reintroduced its Classic PP, a true blast from the past. Crafted with precision and attention to detail, the Walther PP offers a smooth, consistent shooting experience that reflects the company’s legacy of excellence. The reintroduction of the Walther PP is a celebration of heritage, paying homage to its storied past while embracing the advancements of modern technology. For collectors, enthusiasts and those seeking a reliable sidearm with a touch of class and history, this pistol stands as a symbol of craftsmanship and performance.

Chambered in .380 ACP or .32 ACP and black or stainless finish, the DA/SA pistols have a single-action trigger pull of 6 pounds and a double-action pull of 13 pounds. Barrel length is 3.9 inches, and overall length is 6.9 inches. The gun weighs 24 ounces empty and has a magazine capacity of seven rounds.

Revolvers

There’s no doubt that revolvers remain very popular today, and companies that make them realize that many prefer a revolver to a semi-auto for defensive purposes. Let’s look at a pair of wheel guns that your revolver-loving customers might just find interesting.

The Charter Arms Mag Pug Revolver combines a quality revolver with two cylinders — one 9mm, the other .357 Magnum — giving revolver lovers the best of both worlds. Featuring a stainless steel frame and a backpacker walnut wood grip, this revolver’s cylinder has a capacity of five rounds. Barrel length is 4.2 inches.

Cylinders can be easily swapped in less than a minute by removing a single screw with a small, slotted screwdriver. Since 9mm ammunition is typically less expensive than either .357 Magnum or .38 Special rounds, the additional cylinder allows shooters to save a few bucks while still working with the same gun they’ll be using for self-defense purposes. Built on Charter Arms’ medium-sized frame, the revolver has a ported, full underlug barrel to help dampen recoil.

The Diamondback SDR (Self-Defense Revolver) is unique in that it is chambered in 9mm, a cartridge typically associated with semi-auto pistols. Combining reliability, concealability and confidence into one powerful and compact package, the wheel gun boasts an exceptionally smooth trigger pull, low-profile front and rear fiber-optic sights and six-shot capacity.

Available with either a 3-inch or 2-inch barrel, the SDR has a 45 degree target crown machined into the muzzle, which helps protect the rifling and preserves accuracy and bullet dynamics. Low profile fiber-optic sights offer high visibility and contrast to get on-target quickly and minimize snags in critical self-defense situations. The SDR’s trigger features a non-stacking, ultra-smooth trigger pull with a clean break. Plus, the push-button cylinder release is ergonomically placed and features a serrated texture, allowing effortless access to load and eject rounds quickly.
