Trijicon has gone green — as in, the Wixom, Michigan, manufacturer just launched a green-dot version of the RMR. Technically, it is the RMR Type 2 Adjustable LED Reflex Sight featuring a 3.25 MOA green-dot reticle.
Green is big news for recreational shooters and hunters like me who have astigmatism of the eyes. This uneven bending of light causes some objects to appear blurry. While my prescription glasses make objects up close and at distance much sharper, glasses haven’t corrected my issue with red dots.
The issue? My astigmatism makes most red-dots not dots at all. Instead, the red dot can appear flared or fuzzy at the edges, fairly indistinct at other times. In very bright light, a red dot can look like a very ripe tomato dropped onto concrete: all fat and distorted with red “solar flares” at different points.
At the same time, green dots, as well as green illuminated riflescope reticles, are sharp and precise to my eyes.
So, I was very interested to run the new green version of the RMR. It worked so well, this Trijicon offering is now my go-to pistol optic.
As with other RMR’s, this newest version is built around a tough, forged 7075-T6 aluminum housing, offers 1 MOA elevation and windage adjustments, and at a mid-level brightness setting illuminates for up to two years on a single CR2032 lithium battery.
The optic also features an AUTO adjust that configures to lighting conditions, plus a Button Lock Out Mode to prevent accidental adjustment to the preferred brightness setting. The RMR’s Battery Conservation Mode adjusts the aiming dot to ambient lighting conditions after 16.5 hours without a button push to further extend battery life without the unit ever shutting itself off.
I mounted my test and evaluation RMR green-dot onto a Springfield Armory Echelon 4.0C Comp 9mm. The newest of the Echelon line, this pistol shares Springfield’s Variable Interface System, which allows direct mounting of over 30 optics onto the slide once the rear plate is removed.
The RMR fit right onto the Echelon 4.0C Comp, secured by two Torx-head screws.
At my outdoor range, I first shot the RMR and Echelon from a rest at 10 yards. My initial two rounds hit high about 4.0 inches and 2.5 inches right. Using the rim of a spent 9mm cartridge, which fit near perfectly, I gave the windage control several clicks LEFT and shot twice. The shots impacted right above my bullseye, though of course still high.
Then, I began clicking the elevation control down and shooting, and walked the rounds down into my bullseye, minus one round I pulled left.
Once zeroed, I ran the pistol and RMR at 7 yards offhand and easily pegged five-shot groups of 1.5 inches and under.
My shooting occurred in bright sun with occasional shade as clouds moved through overhead. The green-dot, set at a brightness of 4, stayed sharp throughout. No fuzziness or flaring.
I also ran the optic right at dusk. The green-dot cut right through the dim light just fine.
Apparently, green is a little more expensive to produce than red as the newest RMR carries an MSRP of approximately $40 more than its red cousins. Of course, in-store prices will be considerably lower on average than the MSRP.
The green-dot RMR should be big with concealed carry and home defense customers. Given the toughness of the unit, the RMR Adjustable Type2 can also run on shotguns and rifles, and I will use this optic on my hunting 10mm pistols, too.
